Guys, some posts almost sound as people are unhappy, a little patience is needed IMO.

I agree with some things that have been said, I for one am a Linux newbie, I'd be lost if I couldn't use my older backup and one of the main reason I'm using this script rather than another.

But lets not forget that Admin is doing this for Free, and devotes a lot of time to do, lets be nice :) (I for example upgraded to 7.7 2 days ago and had to redo some things, and then a day later it this one comes out, but lets offer suggestions rather than be upset :))

My suggestion would perhaps be to allow everyone to upgrade to 7.7 for example, and then from there clear instructions or a way of being able to restore (or some easy to follow instructions) from a 7.7 (or which ever the latest stable version was) backup to 8 rather than having to have a restore from various different versions.

I will help in any way I can.

It would be nice to have a "migration" plan for those that have large data sets, especially the one for Plex itself. The software could be a reinstall, including new paths, but there should be a way to move over databases, etc. when it makes sense.

Might even be a manual process, but it should still be something that we work on.
Agree

++ on that, ateleast for plex container, we should be able to move that one over...
its almost impossible (atleast for me) to even consider redoing all the plex matches + sonarr/radarr databases :(
+++

Adding in over a 1000 movies for example in Radarr would be soul destroying.

Absolutely this, in the last month and a half having to start from scratch for multiple apps and now the whole setup, without being able to restore backups, isn't something we should be doing. Time providing a solution for people that are not that technical to have their containers backed up, and restored into the new paths should be something required, not an after thought.

I can't suggest using this to a friend that isn't Linux savvy, and every time he wants to up date (maybe once every other month) he has to start from scratch.
Again agree

I've literally just spent this Christmas coming in from V4 to V5 and so forth...Has been a challenge.

Is v9, v10, and so on going to move forward from the previous versions as well? Do we have a development roadmap that we could assist you with so that these rewrites and complete reinstall aren't the norm moving forward?
I've always said since joining the project that this needs a proper road-map with a proper release schedule. Updates are too hectic.

Maybe going forward have an "LTS" option and then an "Edge" version?

See my thoughts around calling V7 "LTS" and rest edge or something like that :)

Keeping on topic, I would like clarification on;

Sonarr 4k, Sonarr HDR, Radarr 4k, Radarr HDR, Omib 4k, Ombi HDR dropped (caused too much confusion)
  • User now has the ability to create custom containers and can replicate which ever version they choose
So to be clear, the option to install a secondary instance called 4K is dropped but you can deploy it yourself by just installing the container via Portainer?

Admin states he has a PMP certification, maybe we could use a more PM orientated approach with a road map and kanban board to help with the issues. I would be more than happy to help with this and to assist in helping to prioritize items to help stabilize and provide the new feature set he is wanting. I really want to try these new features since 7.5.2 but I have seen a ton of people stating a bunch of features are broken and/or don't work properly.

Software development and a release cycle typical has major and minor releases with the major releases being big changes and new features. Minor releases typically have the security updates, tweaks, and fixes needed to support the application. My suggestion would be to go this route. Stop having new releases every day, sometimes multiple times a day. I get that is the Agile method, but when it changes the underlying code to have to start over it doesn't provide a benefit from a Lean perspective. I assume @Admin9705 understands those words and what I am suggesting ;-) I know that myself and @metaljacx have an extreme IT/Project based background and can assist in getting this type of release management setup if you are interested.

Food for thought, not a complaint.

Look, I have been having off-and-on "Technology-Inspired Tourette's Syndrome" since I started building linux servers, and today was no exception, but remember what my wife tells me when she witnesses me screaming at the computer:

"We are doing something very difficult, with a system that is KNOWN for being difficult, in an attempt to automate something REALLY time consuming and normally not available. And, all of this is with equipment, software and services that was NEVER meant to be used this way, all to try to get something HUGE that professionals in the field have gone out of their way to keep us from having!"

When things get too crazy just stop, take a deep breath, go for a walk (or jog or workout or meal or whatever) and then take another whack at it. Nothing is ever accomplished when these things get you so wound up that you can no longer think clearly!

Just my two-cents here, but try to remember this was never supposed to be "easy".

will i be able to restore plex that has been backed up at 7.7.4
It's a beta. give it time. Maybe he will find a solution for the restore issue :)
It's to ensure everyone is on a "level playing field" and we aren't chasing down weird support errors due to issues with prior version configs.

There is a path to avoid nuking all of your appdata, but it involves editing configs. For example with plex, you will need to edit your library folders, same with sonarr and radarr. Downloaders need most of their paths changed. Some older apps were dropped, so organizrv2 appdata needs renamed to organizr.

Unless you are already using sonarrv3, you may need to have fresh appdata, it should upgrade it but that's an app thing.

It's possible but not guaranteed and you will hit API limits with all the rescan plex willhave to do. paths were changed from /unionfs to /mnt/unionfs (or {{processingLocation}}/unionfs. Download paths were changed, it's no longer /mnt/sab, /mnt/rutorrent, etc. it's /mnt/downloads/sabznbd and /mnt/downloads/rutorrent.
we are now just mounting /mnt to /mnt or w/e your path is now. Since sonarr, radarr see your library as /unionfs/tv , you need to use the mass editor and change the root folder to /mnt/unionfs/tv. (select move myself!, DO NOT CLICK ORGANIZE). Same for plex and all your downloaders.

nzbhydra2 is now nzbhydra, just mv the appdata for that and sonarrbeta to sonarr.

Lucky with radarr and sonarr the mass editor allows changing the paths.

We have started writing migration scripts, but those are mostly untested and only move your download folders for now.

We also don't want to support anything older than 18.04 at this point, so consider running apt dist-upgrade

Well this is certainly what this forum is for, little debates such as these which undoubtedly will be the pushing force behind this NEW project.

I hear your opinions everybody. I'm sure these issues will be ironed out in due course. All we can do now as a community is help by doing what we're here to do, test the beta releases and help with the pushes.

An old saying comes to mind where if it's not broken don't fix it. I have a perfectly stable primary server which I don't touch unless I've set up and tested a newer version which I then trust is stable enough for myself to progress forward. This is said pretty much all the time!

Those of you that do have large setups (I have one myself) I can only suggest it would be best to learn, if you do want to upgrade, to change the configs. That time alone would be evidently quicker than starting from scratch? Personally I'd rather start from scratch (why not progress to better setup?) as I know all I do is set everything up, change certain configs and then just wait.

@Admin9705 has developed in such a rapid pace (if you check his very early Reddit posts) and it's great to see this community thriving with helpful talented users. Let's remember we're all doing our part even if it means putting the hours in for a complete rebuild.

Happy New Year!

Since we are moving directories around, it would be nice to have the system NOT create all the directories within /mnt, especially before it asks about a processing disk (which then creates the same directories there, too.)

Instead, I would like to see it WAIT to create the folders until after asking about a processing disk. Once it has done that, it would be great to have those directories within a single folder at that location OR put them all in a single folder within the /var folder.

Just my 2 cents....

(btw, I am working on a set of migration instructions for people that want to move to v8, but it will not be posted until things are more stable within the design of PGv8. Please be patient...)

hey that's perfect. in reality, most backups will work, it's just a matter of doing a restore and then changing the few paths. this would help alot

I've done project management myself and I'm sure as everyone who has can attest, it does have it's flaws as well as advantages but I still maintain that releases need to slow down and have a proper release timeframe and it would be a great benefit to this project.

Ubuntu OS is an example with LTS support for a version before calling it a day.

Or to put into context with cars and the Audi group; Audi's get cutting edge tech..VW get it about 2 years later and then SEAT and SKODA get theirs about a year after that..There's a cycle.

It's to ensure everyone is on a "level playing field" and we aren't chasing down weird support errors due to issues with prior version configs.

I think everyone can understand the need for a level playing field, especially from a support perspective but at the same time, It's never really going to be level for as long as versions keep popping too frequently. Not to mention you may have people running bespoke solutions (ie Cent OS, Debian which isn't ubuntu, etc)

i'm just destroying my soul now and @timekills is making fun of me in discord o_O

@SpencerUk can i use this as a slogan in my sig? LOL
haha, do as you wish.

v8, already? Seriously? It would be absolutely impossible for you to keep up the documentation at the rate you're going. While I appreciate the hard work, should seriously consider a once a month update to add new features and focus on bug fixes and documentation the remainder of the time.

At this speed you could run over my daughter's stereo and not hear it.
(kudos to the person who gets which movie thats from)

just my two cents.

this actually works on the major bug fixes for v8; it's dropping legacy stuff that's creating all the bugs :D
