New here, I'm currently hosting my own plex server. However, my amount of users are quickly exceeding my crappy internet upload speed. I usually have around 7-10 users at any given time, up to 20 users at once. I'm looking for a solid dedicated server that can handle the transcodes. Budget not to exceed $150 a month. In Oklahoma if that matters. Any Help is GREATLY appreciated!
Thanks a ton!

ok - so, yep that makes sense. I looked around and found this thread. Basically, look for an Intel processor that supports Intel Quick Sync, otherwise, you know, you have to get one with a nice GPU.

Here is the thread, quick overview - look for something that gets a high benchmark on PassMark - https://plexguide.com/threads/dedicated-plex-server-with-several-transcodes.7167/

If it looks like a duck, sounds like a duck and quacks like a duck, it’s probably a duck. Unless it’s not a duck. Then you just mis-species’d something and someone will be along shortly to be offended on whatever it actually is’ behalf.

The only time I normally see concurrent user numbers like that are P4S. If you are doing that, then follow P4S best practice - no transcoding. If you want to offer it, iGPU is the only viable option without massive CPU resources (2K of CPU Mark is the published metric for 1080, more for 4K/HDR/H265 and tone mapping is _still_ broken). iGPU wise 5th gen or newer, stick to H264, 6th gen if you want to do H265, but don’t), you could go with a Quadro based set-up but $$$$.

Good info, and thank you for giving a better response, this is a new area for me.

What is the PS4 (not Sony PS4 right?) reference?

I use the IGPU on the EX42-NVMe, it works good for me and my family but that many devices, don't know.

It would be nice to have an area to put specs and amount of streams maxed out. Maybe this is here but have not looked.

P4S = Pay 4 Share, as a general rule you don’t tend to see many friends and family servers with your simultaneous transcoding requirements (lockdown changed that somewhat, every day is basically a weekend), generally it’s 20-30% of total users with a peak on weekends and when new stuff hits/gets binged/events. The EX42-NVMe will handle 20 transcodes just fine assuming we’re talking 1080 and H264, I personally haven’t tried it that high with 4K/HDR/H265 (transcoding 4K and/or HDR is largely pointless though and H265 decode under Linux is still ‘new’).

No I do not charge. Most of my friends/family live in rural areas where DSL is the fastest internet they can obtain. I live in the city and still can't get better than 35 up and it still cost me $200 a month. My internet company does offer a package with 15 up and its only $80 a month. My though process is between the added electric from the server and rack, and the savings on internet, could justify the cost of a dedicated and give everyone a better experience.

https://www.hetzner.de/dedicated-rootserver/ex62-nvme > the one that i've got, works flawless with 4k / 1080p direct plays and some transcodes, allthough i've to admit that i live in austria and don't know how good it will work in the states (maybe consider cloudflare as CDN, but i have no need to use it).the 9900k and its iGPU handle hw transcodes very well.

That is the exact server I tried to sign up with. It would not accept my credit card - only paypal, however I have not received any emails other than my registration login.

I've not looked in a while, but not all Hetzner servers have instant availability, some are quoted with days and even weeks of lead time. For example the EX41-NVMe in the DC I wanted was quoted at 2 weeks from memory.

Well when I checked on availability, it said "instant - 1 workday". I'm not sure if they are just busy or if I signed up wrong. It just had me click paypal - never asked for me to login or send payment. However on the portal it says I will receive an invoice on the 5th, so I'm not sure lol

Did you get a login, are you able to go to https://robot.your-server.de/, then click on your servers? if so you are good to go and they will invoice you.

I got the login credentials for my server exactly one minute after i've placed the order (just checked my mails) - payment method credit card and location is FSN1 (germany)

Got everything yesterday, almost done setting everything up! I did raid 0 and I'm struggling trying to get the other drive to mount - figured I'd use that for sabnzbd. Other than that, everything is going great! I appreciate the knowledge this forum has!

If you did R0, you'd only have 1x2TB drive rather than 2x1TB.
