Hi

I'm thinking about switching to a EX42-NVME as due to Corona i had some peaks in concurrent streams
also a lot of my friends use the Smart TV Apps which very often leads to transcoding

My question therefore:
Is it 100% possible to use hardware transcoding on the EX42
when i searched around i found many threads - yes its possible - but also some where it wasnt possible

Is there a fool proof guide how to enable it on the EX42

All the best

Under PG tools its all there to enable it. Works well enough. 10 streams is light work. It can do about 20 ive seen in action. Depends on the transcoding level

Ew transcoding though :p direct stream those suckers.

EX series should all be great for your use case. On an EX52, I've only seen 4 concurrent hw transcodes, but the CPU was below 20%.

(Assuming Ubuntu 18.04) One note: You'll likely need to manually upgrade the kernel to 5.x (HWE) before you can enable iGPU support on your server.
Code:
sudo apt install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-18.04
After you are on kernel 5.x you can just use the PG Tools option to enable iGPU support and reboot.

Also (and just personal preference), before you setup plexguide I would switch to RAID 0 (RAID 1 is default). With all of the backups taken and stored in the cloud, I prefer more disk space over redundancy. To do this you have to boot into the rescue system from your hetzner portal and reinstall ubuntu, changing the RAID option during setup.

Post automatically merged:

after some problems with the backup i'm finally back life and everything works again

will do some tests and hopefully the hw transcode will bring the wanted upgrade

I've been setting up a new ex42 with NVME this week, and with Ubuntu 18.04.4 and kernel 4.15 HW transcoding works fine.

Ah Smart TV's are the worst. I also am not a fan of the PS4 Plex app.

Anybody had any luck with Direct Play on the Firestick?

I use Apple TV predominately. Sorry to hijack the post here @stammbraeu just forward thinking for some Wiki write ups I'm doing tomorrow.
