Now that Plex has discontinued support for Plex Cloud I am looking for a VPS that supports Plex to stream my movies from Google Drive.
I am located in Australia so I am guessing it would be better for me to find a host here rather than one overseas.
What are other Aussies doing for VPS hosts? Would also be good if the host allowed you to set up the VPS as a seedbox as well.

I currently use two servers, one for downloads and one for streaming. I've got an OVH VPS in Sydney ( https://www.ovh.com.au/vps/#ssd-discover ) but it was a very cheap introductory offer. The price will be much more than I am willing to pay on renewal. Vultr have Sydney based servers too that are meant to be pretty good for Plex.

If I were you I think I'd be trying a bunch of tests for the next little while and hoping for some sort of Black Friday sale. I've had decent results with cloudflare CDN from international servers and I think that's the direction I'll be heading, possibly even a hetzner dedicated from the auction.

Maybe set up a GCE Feeder edition to take care of your downloads for a while as you shop around testing streaming capabilities.

Hetzner have dirt cheap VPSs. Netcup have been good for me and seem quite cheap as well. If you don't want to test out CDN then have a look through the Benchmarks thread ( https://plexguide.com/threads/post-your-benchmarks.411/unread ) and Ctrl-F for the exotic or Sydney results to get an idea.

Torrents I don't really use so can't say much about that but you'll be definitely be needing to stick it behind a VPN if you want to run that from Australia.

Ok, I think you lost me at CDN and GCE Feeder sorry. Can you please explain what these are?

What do you use instead of torrents? Newsgroups?

Thanks

CDN - content delivery network. Use the free Cloudflare network to deliver content, much much faster generally speaking to Australia. https://plexguide.com/news/wiki/cloudflare/

GCE is the Google Compute Engine. You get $300 free credit or something with your account, with this you can run a VPS on the google cloud system and use it only for doing downloads, no playback. Then you can just test out streaming from various VPS solutions without interrupting or having to reconfigure your download settings. https://plexguide.com/news/wiki/pg-editions/

And yep Newsgroups. Stopped using torrents when iiNet lost their court case.

There are probably a few threads here on both Cloudflare and GCE

When I last looked into newsgroups (maybe five years ago) there were tons of missing posts (I assume due to legal action) and it was tough to get complete downloads. Has that changed?

New stuff is fine, old stuff not so good but depends on who you have an account with and where they are based as far as DCMA goes. DMCA? The copyright blokes...

I still use torrents but sort of manually, usually an entire show or season at a time or x265 or just something I can't find.
