Advanced Metadata Editing: Fixing Titles, Collections, and Posters

Sometimes Plex doesn’t quite get it right. Maybe it mislabels a special, or puts a holiday short in the wrong spot. The good news is…you can take control.

Fixing Titles and Matching:

  • Click the pencil icon on a movie/show
  • Edit the title, year, and summary manually
  • Use Fix Match to force a new metadata lookup

Organizing with Collections:

  • Under a movie’s Edit menu, go to the “Tags” tab
  • Add it to a collection (e.g., “Batman Collection” or “Pixar Films”)
  • Collections are shown as groups in your library if enabled in Display settings

Custom Posters and Backgrounds:

  • Right-click a poster > Set Poster or Set Background
  • Upload your own artwork
  • For automatic scraping, use a consistent naming like poster.jpg or fanart.jpg in the media folder

Bonus: Lock Your Changes
After editing, hit the lock icon next to each field to prevent Plex from overwriting it during a scan.

Once you master metadata editing…you control the Plex aesthetic, not the other way around.
