Creating a Plex Library for Old TV Shows, Cartoons, and Home Movies

Want to bring your childhood back to life? Plex is perfect for preserving retro content…especially shows that never made it to streaming.

Step 1: Get the Files

  • Rip from VHS or DVD using tools like HandBrake or MakeMKV
  • Look online for rare finds in the right circles
  • Be sure the format is compatible (MP4, MKV, etc.)

Step 2: Organize by Show and Season
Use proper naming:

  • Show Name/Season 01/Show Name - S01E01.ext
  • Avoid adding year, codec, or source unless needed

Step 3: Manual Metadata Help

  • Old or obscure shows might not match correctly
  • Use Fix Match and choose TheTVDB or a local metadata agent
  • For unreleased content, consider NFO files with custom metadata

Add Nostalgic Artwork

  • Use classic logos or era-specific posters
  • Set your own backgrounds for that 90s Saturday-morning vibe

It takes effort…but it’s worth it when you fire up that forgotten cartoon and it just works.
