Subtitles can make or break the viewing experience…especially when they don’t show up, show the wrong language, or appear out of sync. Here’s how to tame them once and for all.
Step 1: Set Your Preferences
Go to Settings > Languages
in the Plex Web App:
- Choose your default audio and subtitle language
- Enable “Automatically select audio and subtitle tracks”
Step 2: Check Your Files
Subtitles can be embedded (inside the video file) or external (.srt
, .ass
, etc.).
Make sure the subtitle file:
- Has the same filename as the video
- Is in the same folder
- Uses UTF-8 encoding to avoid weird characters
Step 3: Use Subtitle Agents or External Tools
- Enable
OpenSubtitles
inSettings > Agents > Movies/TV
- Tools like Bazarr can auto-download and manage subtitles
- You may need a free OpenSubtitles account
Step 4: Fix Sync Issues
If subs are out of sync:
- Try using a different version
- Use a player like VLC or Kodi with a Plex add-on to test adjustments before replacing
Subtitles shouldn’t be a battle…once things are dialed in, it’s smooth sailing.
