How to Share Plex Safely with Friends and Family

Sharing is one of Plex’s best features…but if you don’t set boundaries, things can get messy fast. Here’s how to do it safely, cleanly, and with minimal support headaches.

Start by Using Plex Home or Managed Users

  • Great for family members in the same household
  • Lets you create accounts for kids or roommates without separate logins
  • You control their access and viewing permissions

For Friends or Remote Sharing:

  • Go to Settings > Users & Sharing
  • Send invites using their Plex email address
  • Choose what libraries they can access
  • Decide if they can download, share, or see “On Deck”

Set Expectations Early
Let them know if you don’t want them sharing your server or giving feedback on missing content. It’s your library… you make the rules.

Monitor Activity (Gently)
Use Tautulli or Plex’s built-in dashboard to see who’s watching. If someone’s causing buffering or constant transcodes, you’ll know.

Sharing Plex should feel generous, not stressful…a little setup goes a long way.
