Parental Controls in Plex: Keeping Kids in the Right Library

Letting kids use Plex doesn’t mean giving them access to your entire horror collection. Parental controls help you create a safe, age-appropriate viewing experience.

Step 1: Create a Managed User
Go to Settings > Users & Sharing

  • Click “Add Managed User”
  • Set a name, color, and avatar
  • Assign only the kid-safe libraries

Step 2: Set Restrictions

  • Enable rating restrictions (e.g., PG or below)
  • Limit trailers, extras, and other adult content
  • You can also prevent downloading and sharing

Step 3: Use Separate Libraries

  • Keep kids content in its own library (“Kids TV” or “Family Movies”)
  • This makes filtering and access control much simpler

Optional: Use PIN Locks

  • Add a PIN to adult users so kids don’t accidentally switch accounts
  • Found under each user’s profile settings

Done right, kids can explore safely…and you can breathe a little easier.
