Plex Dance 101: How to Force Refresh or Fix Stuck Metadata

If Plex is showing the wrong title, missing a poster, or refusing to update…it’s time for the infamous Plex Dance. These a set of steps that usually fixes stubborn media.

What It Is:
The Plex Dance forces Plex to drop the current metadata and re-scan the item cleanly.

How to Do the Plex Dance (Single File):

  1. Rename the folder or file slightly (e.g., add _temp)
  2. Update the library
  3. Rename it back to the correct name
  4. Refresh metadata manually

For Multiple Files or Entire Libraries:

  • Remove the folder from the library
  • Update the library
  • Add it back
  • Run a full metadata refresh

Other Tricks:

  • Use Fix Match to manually correct metadata
  • Turn off “Plex Movie” and use “The Movie Database” agent if you’re having persistent issues

It’s not pretty…but it works. And yes, everyone who’s used Plex for more than a month has done it at least once.
